The 2021 NOSE symposium

From Aroma to Anosmia

Unconscious Patient (Allegory of Smell) by Rembrandt van Rijn (Leiden 1606 – 1669 Amsterdam). From The Leiden Collection Catalogue, 3rd ed. Edited by Arthur K. Wheelock Jr. and Lara Yeager-Crasselt. New York, 2020–. https://theleidencollection.com/artwork/the-unconscious-patient-an-allegory-of-smell/ (accessed January 31, 2021).

Although the human sense of smell has been underestimated and neglected for a long time, recent insights demonstrate this is not true. In particular, the recent COVID-19 pandemic shows us the importance of olfaction, and also what can be lost.

Please join us for the 2021 NOSE symposium, including excellent national and international speakers, where we will highlight and discuss the main functions of the human sense of smell (according to Stevenson 2010 in Chemical Senses): as part of flavor perception for ingestive behavior; avoidance or warning of environmental hazards; and social communication. In addition, we will focus on smell loss, its impact on patients, and the potential causal mechanisms in COVID-19.

The NOSE symposium will take place on February 25th, 2021, 14.00-17.00, via Zoom. Please visit our Registration page to register. Note that there is a limit to the amount of participants we can host.
